Southside Middle School's robotics team is composed of 10-15 members each year. You will find that the SMS team is somewhat unique compared to the other teams in the War Eagle BEST hub and in the South's BEST Region. Each year our team is comprised of all new members. We do not have carry over members from the previous year. This is because we use our 8th grade "Gifted" students who are interested in robotics and/or engineering to make up the current year's team.

Southside Middle School has had a team in the War Eagle BEST hub for the past 5 years. Participating in BEST robotics has made lasting impressions on many of our past team members. Currently, we have past team members who are majoring in engineering, mathematics and pre-med. at Auburn University and at Bama. In addition, we have past team members enrolled in engineering courses offered at Tallassee High School.

This year's SMS team meets for 2 hours per week of at school time, and for another 2 hours a week of after school time. Most of our hands on work sessions, fabrication, construction and practice are done on the weekends- Saturdays and/or Sundays. Our team is made up of ten 8th graders who have demonstrated a strong work ethic, a dedicated and competitive spirit, and a host of problem solving and creative thinking skills throughout this process.
